چکیده

We map the glacial geomorphology of former Patagonian Ice Sheet between 44°S and 46°S. Building on previous work, our covers a ∼50,000 km2 region west-central Patagonia. The study area includes eastward-flowing Río Pico, Caceres, Cisnes, Lago Plata-Fontana, El Toqui, Coyt/Río Ñirehuao, Simpson/Paso Coyhaique, Balmaceda palaeo-outlet glaciers, adjacent valleys, Andean Cordillera. inventory contains >70,000 individual landforms mapped from remotely-sensed imagery field surveys. Mapping was classified into ice-marginal (e.g. moraine ridges, trimlines), subglacial lineations, flutes), glaciolacustrine palaeolake shorelines, perched deltas), glaciofluvial proglacial outwash plains, meltwater channels), non-glacial palaeochannels, landslides or slumps) landform groups. new will inform future interpretations regional glacier dynamics, development robust geochronological datasets that test timing glaciation deglaciation.

Quantifying ice-sheet feedbacks during the last glacial inception

[1] The last glacial inception ( 116 ky ago) has long been used to test the sensitivity of climate models to insolation. From these simulations, atmospheric, oceanic and vegetation feedbacks have been shown to amplify the initial insolation signal into a rapid growth of ice-sheets over the northern hemisphere. However, due to the lack of comprehensive atmosphere-ocean-vegetation-northern hemisp...

Applying Sparse Matrix Solvers to a Glacial Ice Sheet Model

More recent models have attempted to use better physics to describe ice velocities in regions where velocities vary significantly over short distances. These models use a 3-dimensional, rectangular FEM grid. While the 2-dimensional model is used for an entire ice sheet, the 3-dimensional model is used over a limited area of interest with a smaller distance between grid points. Output of the 2-d...

Rapid thinning of the late Pleistocene Patagonian Ice Sheet followed migration of the Southern Westerlies

Here we present the first reconstruction of vertical ice-sheet profile changes from any of the Southern Hemisphere's mid-latitude Pleistocene ice sheets. We use cosmogenic radio-nuclide (CRN) exposure analysis to record the decay of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and into the late glacial. Our samples, from mountains along an east-west transect to the ...

Antarctic timing of surface water changes off Chile and Patagonian ice sheet response.

Marine sediments from the Chilean continental margin are used to infer millennial-scale changes in southeast Pacific surface ocean water properties and Patagonian ice sheet extent since the last glacial period. Our data show a clear "Antarctic" timing of sea surface temperature changes, which appear systematically linked to meridional displacements in sea ice, westerly winds, and the circumpola...

Conference and Workshop Climate Impacts on Glaciers and Biosphere in Fuego-Patagonia

The Patagonian Icefields are among the highest latitude and most sensitive icefields in the Southern Hemisphere, and are responding sensitively to climate. Their response to rapid climate changes during the Last Termination and during Holocene palaeoclimatic fluctuations has the potential to elucidate changes in large scale atmospheric circulation as well as aid better predictions of their futu...
